Making Connections Community

Tunxis ePortfolio Student Showcase Event

05.12.10

For the past several years, faculty members at Tunxis Community College have been working on an Ability-Based Education Project (ABE), which focuses on student learning.  All students enrolled in a degree program must demonstrate achievement of a set of General Education Abilities along with the abilities (outcomes) of their degree program.

On May 5, 2010, the Computer Information Systems (CIS) and Business Office Technology (BOT) Programs at Tunxis held their first joint Advisory Board ePortfolio Showcase.  Instead of the traditional advisory board business meeting, the main goal of this evening was to give board members a chance to interact with students on a personal basis and to have the opportunity to see examples of ABE and student learning.  Eighteen students from the CIS Coop Ed/Work Experience course and BOT Administrative Practicum prepared both a showcase and assessment ePortfolio.  Computers were setup around the room; each student had a half hour to present their ePortfolios to one or two members of the advisory board. Despite the fact that these students began working with Digication last September, their ePortfolios were very good and the evening was an overwhelming success!  The students were excited and did an excellent job presenting their work.  Advisory board members enjoyed the presentations, asking questions and interacting with students. President Cathryn Addy and several deans of the college also participated in the showcase, listening and interacting during the student presentations.  It was, in the words of David England, Dean of Workforce Development, "Ability-Based Education in action!"
